Red emergency cords are designed so someone can safely and easily alert people outside the facilities that they need help. The cord needs to be easy to reach for someone sitting on the toilet or by someone lying on the floor, but they are far too often cut short, not present, out of reach or tied up.

This means somebody in distress or in an emergency might not be able to reach the cord to raise the alarm, causing unncessary risk to disabled people.

Our Red Cord Cards were created as a solution to this problem. These pocket-sized, splash-proof notices in easy-to-read font raise awareness of safety in accessible toilets and slide easily onto red emergency cords. We've sent out over 150,00 Red Cord Cards and, with your help, we’re aiming to make even more accessible loos safer.

The Euan's Guide Access Survey is the UK’s largest and longest-running survey on disabled access, with over 6,500 participants and with over a decade of data. The Euan’s Guide Access Survey helps amplify the voices of disabled people, and our website was set up to combat the problem of poor or unavailable disabled access information.

The 2024 Access Survey data reports that 78% of respondents are not confident about visiting new places when thinking about accessibility and 73% of respondents have come across an accessible toilet that they’ve been unable to use.
