Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum

As much a shrine as a museum, the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum is a celebration of the life and work of arguably one of the most influential Scots of the 19th century. Carnegie was an industrialist, philanthropist and one of the wealthiest men of his time. Although born in Scotland, he emigrated to the United States with his family in 1848. Making his fortune in the steel industry, Andrew sold his company in 1901 and turned his focus to philanthropy. He built the infamous Carnegie Hall in Manhattan, founded over 2,500 libraries and even financed an excavation of a dinosaur! The species Diplodocus Carnegii carries his name, with the fossil earning the nickname Dippy in time. Dippy is known the world over and is the most complete dinosaur fossil ever unearthed.

Unfolding the legacy of Andrew Carnegie

It what I expected but better. Once inside the building I was surprised by the size of the exhibition and the stories it told. The museum and birthplace combine an old traditional weavers cottage with the twentieth century exhibition hall.

Main Entrance: There are 12 steps from the pavement to the entrance, the bottom section has a handrail. The main door is motion sensitive and opens automatically. There are fewer steps, only 4 in total, to the main entrance if you are approaching via the side gate. Side Entrance: Level access to the museum is through side entrance only. This entrance is always kept locked for security reasons. To enter, ring the low-level doorbell (to the right from the door).

There is a long-stay Pay & Display car park (run by Fife Council) next to the museum. The car park has 38 spaces, two of which are designated Blue Badge holders’ bays. The Blue Badge bays are located directly opposite the birthplace cottage - the only level access entrance point (approx. 10 metres away). The surface from the car park to the entrance of the museum is paved and slightly inclined.

Toilets features at Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum

There is level access from the side entrance to the public toilet. All toilets can be accessed through the garden only. The distance from the reception area to the toilet is 35 metres. The toilet has a sliding door. There are grab rails on both sides of the toilet but they are not colour-contrasted. There is an emergency cord.
