Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum in South Shields, has a very special place in the history of Hadrian’s Wall. Standing to the south of the River Tyne, Arbeia guarded the main sea route to Hadrian’s Wall and was a key garrison and military supply base to the rest of the Wall. Walk in the footsteps of Emperor Severus who used the fort as his headquarters, explore the remains and see some of Britain's best reconstructions.

Disabled Access Information for Arbeia Roman Fort

Access ramp into the museum building. Please note the doors are heavy duty. The surface around the Fort is generally flat but uneven and can vary from grass to gravel. The main paths throughout the site remains are original Roman roads covered with gravel and stones so please take great care when exploring and making your way to the reconstructed buildings. Free-standing, battery-powered listening points. Large print copies of the audio commentaries and a portable induction loop are available. Print and braille guides are available. Large tactile plan of the Fort at first listening point.
