This site is closed. An exceptional fortress-residence that was overthrown within 50 years of its construction despite its state-of-the-art artillery defences. Built in around 1530, it was the personal residence of Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, King James V's talented master of works. There is evidence of his many military innovations, including a shooting gallery or caponier. It was 'cast doun' by order of the Privy Council.
