The "accessible" toilets are not accessible!

We went for a special occasion meal in 2023. The person I was with was in a wheelchair and became stuck in the toilet. Her husband (her main support) could not go into the toilet with her as the disabled toilets are within the gendered toilets. There was not enough space for her to turn the wheelchair. She was distressed and stuck in there for 20 minutes. The response from the staff was apologetic with a promise that head office would investigate and make changes. Emails were exchanged with an acknowledgement that the toilet did not meet standards and changes would be made. A year later we returned expecting changes to at least be in process. We were told there are actually no changes planned and if we had an issue with the toilet we should go two floors down. Accessing the downstairs toilet with the accessibility needs would have meant returning to a cold meal and everyone else finished! I am also not sure that those toilets were different! So disappointed.

Amazing and Accessible but need to do better with the toilet

The recommendation to visit came from Euan's Guide's very own Access & Inclusion Director, Paul Ralph, thanks Paul! So I knew it was going to be brilliant and accessible. The restaurant offers delicious food, attentive service, comfortable and stylish surroundings and stunning views, over St Andrew's Square towards Edinburgh Castle and in the opposite direction towards the River Forth. When I visited I opted for their Summer Dining Menu of three courses and a glass of wine (I had a non alcoholic substitute of my choice) for £30.

Spectacular views

Views are probably unparalleled in an Edinburgh restaurant. Ask for a window seat if possible. Food was a mixed bag. Mine was delicious. The person who was dining with me ordered steak and hers wasn’t cooked medium (as requested) at all.

There are no stairs to the entrance to the store, and the Forth Floor is accessible via a lift from the ground floor (all floors in the store are accessible via this lift). We have disabled toilets on the Forth Floor and these have a push pad opening. They are wide enough for a wheelchair. There are no slopes on any of the floors. The lifts are standard lifts with doors.

Harvey Nichols Edinburgh has its own carpark under the store. The car park is accessible via the main store lift, which has access to all of the store’s floors, including the Forth Floor Restaurant, Bar and Brasserie and is therefore suitable for disabled parking. A space can be booked by calling our Customer Services Team on 0131 524 8388. There is public street parking in St. Andrew Square at the front of the store.

There are accessible toilets on the premises with step free access, with doors wide enough for a manual wheelchair or power chair. There are grab rails, a raised toilet seat and easy turn taps.
