Escape by boat to this remarkable island, home to one of the most complete medieval abbeys in Scotland. It was supposedly founded by King Alexander I after he was stranded here in 1123. Step inside the near-complete cloisters and chapter house, learn more in the visitor centre and drink in views over the Firth of Forth from the bell tower. elsewhere on the island are wartime fortifications. 1 Apr to 30 Sept: Daily, 10.30am to to last entry at 4.45pm (closes 5.30pm). 1 to 31 Oct: Daily, 10.30am to last entry at 3.45pm (closes 4.30pm). 1 Nov to 31 Mar: Closed

Approach to site Two commercial ferries sail to the island, both from South Queensferry (Maid of the Forth, 0131 331 5000; Forth Boat Tours, 0870 118 1866). Both boats have narrow gangways onto them. The island pier has 20 stone steps (the descent may be shorter, depending on the tide). Visitor Centre There is a loose gravel path from the ferry landing to the visitor centre. It is accessed up a metal stair with handrails on both sides. Alternatively, please speak to a steward for ramped access. Monument The abbey is 180m from the landing up a gentle slope. There are threshold steps at both the east and west doors, which lead to the cloister and chapter house. Light levels can be very low. The abbey’s upper levels are reached by uneven historic stairs. The bell tower is reached by a very narrow and steep stone spiral stair and then steep wooden ladder-steps. Surroundings The First and Second World War ruins are reached along very uneven, steep rocky paths. Gulls may attack during nesting season (March – July) if you get too close.
