    aboutSectionText

Discover 300 years of Scottish history through this magnificent and carefully conserved neo-Palladian villa. Newhailes is famed for having some of the finest rococo interiors in Scotland. Newhailes has been allowed to grow old gracefully through a pioneering conservation policy which does ‘as much as is necessary, but as little as possible’ to keep the house in good order without disturbing its ‘untouched’ atmosphere. Start at the stable block courtyard to watch a short video about the house’s highlights. Then take a guided tour of the house. Some of the key rooms include the magnificent, purpose-built library and the Chinese sitting room, with its early 18th-century trompe l’oeil decoration. Afterwards leave some time to explore the grounds. Take one of the wheelchair-friendly paths through acres of shady woodlands and grasslands. Finally, stop for a bite in our café and browse the shop, offering a good range of gifts.

Good visit, not very accessible though

So I went to Newhailes with a friend and didn’t ring ahead to check information about accessibility. Fortunately I took my walker and stick rather than the scooter and was having a good day generally in terms of ability. The small carpark has some disabled parking but all the parking is only a short distance to the Stables cafe and information office. The paths are mainly gravel, some a bit loose. The cafe is accessible as is the information office, and very pleasant. Staff are very helpful. The only disabled toilet I found was inside an ordinary toilet but I understand there is separate one somewhere. The house though is not at all wheelchair accessible, despite having a lift, due to fire regulations. So the actual entrance is up the stairs at the front which you can see in pictures, this is about 100m from the information office, you need to book a tour. If you can manage the stairs you do the tour on that level, it’s very interesting, but the stairs to the level above that are rather more difficult with a spiral staircase and I stayed on the main level. My friend carried my walker up the steps to the house and I went up with my stick, these stairs were even and safe enough. The rooms had one or two seats for people who needed them. I waited for the group to come back down from the upper level and the tour continued. We really enjoyed the visit and on the day there were various other things going on around the courtyard area, a small market and a sculpture display that would have been of interest to people who couldn’t go through the house.

The Visitor Centre (including shop and café) in the Stables Courtyard is fully accessible by wheelchair from our car park. The courtyard is primarily stone-cobbled, but there is a tarmac path as well. Unfortunately wheelchair-bound visitors can not see the first floor of the house, but they are welcome to peruse the 'first floor folder' which contains photographs of the rooms. Many paths around the grounds at Newhailes are wheelchair accessible - please inquire at the visitor center for further information.

We have our own car park with 2 disabled spots that are positioned closer to the entrance of the stable block. The stable block/visitor center is only a short distance away from the car park. There is a £2 car parking charge for non-NT/NTS members.
