    aboutSectionText

Based in the heart of Oxford, Oxford Playhouse and its Burton Taylor Studio present and produce a wide range of live performance. The programme includes the best of British and international drama, family shows, contemporary dance and music, student and amateur shows, comedy, lectures and poetry. We also create live performance here in Oxford. The Playhouse produces and tours its own shows, hosts Artists in Residence and presents Playhouse Plays Out, an ongoing series of off-site events which happen at locations across the county. The theatre's Learning team works with over 15,000 people each year through post show discussions, workshops, work experience, holiday schemes, a youth theatre and a young people’s theatre company.

    Deaf/ mobility access

I have visited the Oxford Playhouse a few times. Booking access tickets is easy online. The team respond quickly and pleasantly to emails. For busy shows the reception area and bar area’s are busy and cramped. There are bottle necks of queues, so it’s that bit harder to get help from staff, for example it’s hard to reach the customer service desk through those waiting in the lobby, to collect a loop device/ask for help to limit standing. But once you reach staff they are super helpful and sunny. The queues go down more quickly because staff roam the lobby with check in devices, you’re not reliant on the check in people at the doors. Please contact the team by email to make sure you book accessible seats for your needs, for example the hearing aid loop sweet spot area, coverage is poor at the back of the theatre.

The main Playhouse is good for access.

The Playhouse have done what they can. The main theatre has a small number of wheelchair accessible spaces where the seat can be removed to fit in a wheelchair and I believe that wheelchair spaces can now be booked online, although I haven't done this. They also operate a "carer gets in free" ticket system. Cafe is small but wheelchair accessible. Upstairs rooms and the BT studio are inaccessible, due to the buildings layouts, I believe.

BT Studio - Completely inaccessible for mobility-impaired

This excellent little studio hosts some of Oxford's most exciting theatre. As part of Oxford Playhouse, it really should have (at least some) attempt at disabled access…
