Little community theatre, level access throughout
I'm a volunteer at the Abbey Theatre and I wanted to share the accessibility of the Abbey Theatre for potential future visitors. *I do not have special access needs myself, but have accompanied wheelchair users in the building. I have overlooked anything please let me know and I will update if I can.
Access from the street is level and flat so can accommodate wheel chair access or impaired mobility. The auditorium is raked, but the first row is dedicated to wheel chairs users and companions. Access to the bar is also flat & level.
There is a disabled access toilet, but there is not a baby change or adult change space.
There is a bar selling sweets, ice creams, teas & coffees and a licensed bar. The bar staff are lovely and will provide hot-water or anything else you need.
The council car park outside has two dedicated disabled access spaces. The carpark is all on ground level and there is a dropped kerb into the building. Distance from the car park is a few metres. There is a hearing aid loop in the building.
Guide dogs / assistance dogs are of course welcome.
Next door to the Abbey Theatre is a semi-covered courtyard space called 'The Courtyard'. This is level access, level bistro style seating and unisex toilet.
There additional rehearsal spaces up a flight of stairs, and there is no lift or ramp.
We are working on making the bar space convertible into a multi-function space which would provide space for creative activities without having to go upstairs. The space has been arranged but I don't think there are any user groups using this space like this yet.
Their programme is live music, comedy, films, dance, drama and musical theatre; a mixture of professional tours and local groups and schools. Tickets for most events are purchased online via ticketsource.
