The D-Day Story is the only UK museum dedicated to telling the events of 6th June 1944 through objects, interactives and video from the perspectives and accounts of those who were there. D-Day was a crucial turning point during the second world war and began the liberation of France laying the foundations for the Allied victory in Europe. Divided into three distinct parts, the museum visit includes access onboard LCT 7074, the last surviving landing craft tank in the world which carried up to ten tanks during the Normandy landings and the impressive 83 metre Overlord Embroidery. A multi million pound redevelopment of the museum completed in 2018, was developed with accessibility for all at its core and our team are more than happy to answer any queries ahead of a visit to the museum.

D-Day Museum

The D-Day museum has a car park with accessible parking and is also on a bus route. Outside the museum is the last surviving landing craft for tanks from D-Day, the deck of which is fully wheelchair accessible (albeit with some very steep ramps). The deck is uneven in places. Tactile displays, audio descriptions, captioned videos and even videos with sign language are on display. The rest of the museum is a modern building, fully accessible, with exhibits at a good height to be viewed from a wheelchair. The gift shop sells plushie pigeons, in honour of Gustav, the hero homing pigeon of D-Day. They are adorable. Staff are super friendly.

The main museum building has level access throughout and is suitable for wheelchair access. The Overlord Embroidery gallery is accessed via a ramp. As a historic ship, LCT 7074 can be challenging to navigate fully if you have a mobility impairment or are using a wheelchair. There is a slope up the ramp that leads onto the ship, followed by a steep slope the other side. This can be difficult to get over, particularly if you are visiting by yourself. On deck there are many uneven areas with raised metal parts. Access to the upper deck is by steps only. The highest deck can only be accessed by a steep metal ladder. In the area of the ship called the engine room there is a video that shows you what the upper decks look like so you can still see it without needing to go up. There is seating throughout the museum galleries and onboard LCT 7074. An accessible toilet is available in the main museum building and a Changing Places toilet is available in the adjacent public car park - please note this is not managed by the museum itself and requires a radar key to access. The main museum galleries have induction loops fitted throughout. Audio guides are available in English, French and German as well a detailed audio described guide of the Overlord Embroidery. A wheelchair is available for use as are LED magnifying glasses and ear defenders. Gallery guides are also available. A large 125 space public pay and display car park is located adjacent to the museum. There are marked disabled spaces and parking is free for blue badge holders. There is level access between the car park and museum entrance which has automatic doors. On street parking is also available close to the museum.

Toilets features at The D-Day Story

There is an accessible toilet in the main museum building on ground level located close to the main entrance. There are also public toilets in the car park adjacent to the museum which includes a changing places toilet (please note these toilets are not managed by the museum). These toilets require a radar key to access and are open from 0700 - 1900. There are no toilets onboard LCT 7074.
