Sensory garden

Sensory garden has wide flat and smooth paths for easy wheelchair access and seating for rest stops. The plants are colourful, smell good and feel good too the garden was designed by Tom Stewart smith they had wide paths around the exhibition making to easy to navigate in a wheelchair. They had seating for rest stops in the gallery space

Great art gallery

We visited the Hepworth today and were greeted on arrival. There was a one way system in place, lots of hand sanitiser stations in place and staff were wearing face coverings. Please be aware that the hand sanitiser stations are foot pump operated (like a bathroom bin). Screens were around the central desk. There is a large lift upstairs to the galleries. The art was really nice and interesting. There was a temporary exhibition that was free to enter for Wakefield residents but only £3 to others. Well recommended to visit. We have been before many times and have had no issues with my girlfriend’s wheelchair requirements.

Our staff are trained in all aspects of visitor care and are here to help you during your visit. Our Visitor Experience team can be found across the gallery to offer information on artworks, the building and facilities. Whatever you need, please ask for their assistance during your visit or feel free to get in touch beforehand. We are fully accessible to wheelchair users, scooters and pushchairs and has ramp access to all areas. The Hepworth Wakefield is entered on the ground level via automatic doors, with a lift to the gallery spaces on the first floor. The visitor facilities are on the ground floor (café, shop and toilets). The Calder is accessed via a ramp, through automatic doors. The gallery has a Changing Places toilet that is located within the gallery’s Clore Learning Studios on the ground floor, an area of the building used primarily by families and schools. The facility has a height adjustable adult sized changing bench, a tracking hoist system and adequate space in the changing area for the person with additional needs and up to two carers.

The Hepworth Wakefield has 5 parking bays on site at the end of Gallery Walk for Blue Badge holders only. Access to these bays is via Tootal Street. There are also disabled spaces in The Hepworth Wakefield's visitor car park on Thornes Lane.

Toilets features at The Hepworth Wakefield

The main public toilets are on the ground floor to the right hand side of the Information Desk at the rear of the foyer. This area of public toilets includes standard toilets plus disabled facilities and a baby change area. There are 3 disabled toilets throughout the building, one on the ground floor, one in Gallery 6 and another in the Learning Studios. All disabled toilets have a functional emergency alarm, coat hooks and wall mounted rails. The gallery has a Changing Places toilet that is located within the gallery’s Clore Learning Studios on the ground floor, an area of the building used primarily by families and schools. The facility has a height adjustable adult sized changing bench, a tracking hoist system and adequate space in the changing area for the person with additional needs and up to two carers.
