Winterbourne was built in 1903 for the Nettlefold family. Now owned by the University of Birmingham and restored to its Edwardian Arts and Craft splendour, the house is set within seven acres of beautiful botanic gardens. Located not far from Birmingham city centre, Winterbourne is a hidden gem – home to beautiful antiques and over 6,000 plant species from around the world. The house offers two floors of exhibition rooms for you to explore while the gardens include a woodland walk, hazelnut tunnel, glass houses and a walled garden.

A Gem Of A Garden

A beautiful garden and Edwardian Villa with a cafe/tea room in the heart of the city. A well thought out and detailed access statement is available on their website. Mobility scooters available to borrow for the beautiful gardens which have excellent paths suitable for scooters or wheelchairs. Some areas of the garden weren't suitable for the scooter but we didn't feel this prevented us enjoying the majority of it. The house was a bonus on a hot sunny day and we'll go back to give that more time.

Disabled Access Information for Winterbourne House and Garden

Wheelchairs can access most of the garden via recently upgraded paths although there are areas where full access is not possible. Manual wheelchairs can access the house and we have a lift for the second floor. Due to space limitations, some large motorised chairs may not be able to use the lift. The tearoom, gift shop and an accessible toilet are all available on the ground floor level of the site. We have a manual wheelchair and a mobility scooter that can be borrowed for use around the garden when availability allows. The gift shop is fitted with a low level counter.

An accesible toilet is available in the main house and is located approximately 20m away from the tearoom. It is furnished with grab rails, an assitance alarm and levers for the taps and door lock.
