Pennyhill Park

First trip away for 2 nights since my hubbies bi lateral leg amputation. Hotel is absolutely breathtaking. All the staff we came across could not do enough for us, mostly. Booked accessible room, which was lovely, large enough for power wheelchair to get around easily. Bathroom was enormous, but the shower had no removable shower head, which makes it difficult to clean properly, only overhead rain showerhead and sprays down the side. The sinks were great, one was lower, able to get wheelchair under. mirror was lower. None of the outside doors were easy to open, no automatic opening doors, and most of the staff at the reception desk, just watched as I tried to open the two doors to get the wheelchair through, as opening one door wasn't wide enough for the chair. Same in the building where room was, nigh on impossible to open door alone for wheelchair user, plus there was a very steep incline to get up to go to building where the restaurant and bar were. If you had a self propelled chair would have been impossible to wheelchair yourself up unaided. This may seem a bit nit picky, but our first trip away in our new normal.....

This remains our favourite hotel, outstanding in all areas except accessible support, but this may not involve you with any worries as staff go out of their way to support you. TO SEE WHY ITS OUR FAVOURITE HOTEL, READ THESE LATEST REVIEWS AND OTHERS As you arrive at Pennyhill, the welcoming sign at main gate shows you right away that you will enjoy this visit (photo 1) and you have a very pleasant drive as passing well laid out meadow parkland (photo 2) that leads you along to the car park area (photo 3) but disabled should drive under the wooden roofed archway that’s ahead of you and continue to the next arch (photo 4) which will take you to the main hotels entrance as you finally leave the archways behind (photo 5) and you reach the front entrance (photo 6). The one and only disabled bay stands right by the main entrance, you can see our car in place in the corner. ( If this bay is taken read our notes below for disabled access, and you will have no worries ). At reception desk, explain you are either visiting today, and would like to enjoy a coffee break with them, or book in here if you are staying, and hopefully you choose an accessible room with them, they have two you can choose, but may we recommend the LANSDOWNE ROAD room to you, as our photos below will show you why. First of all though, a coffee break may tempt you in their wonderfull bar, nicely decorated in appealing pale natural colours, and warming (photo 7) with comfortable seating areas, where you can leave your wheelchair next to you (photo 8). The bar has a very good selection of drinks, waiter service for you (photo 9) and it will be here that you may enjoy afternoon tea with Pennyhill ( photo 10) posh, comfortable and easy going, very nice. Quick snacks are available, their chips were very nice we must say, with Mexican bites that will warm your heart, taken with a favourite tipple (photo 11) and follow them down with a pink gin, know wonder he looks happy (photo 12). Now though it’s time to book in and find our room for tonight. You will be taken to their adjoining rooms, which shows the way ahead to possibly the nicest Spa and health club we have yet seen (photo 13) (REVIEWED PREVIOUSLY FOR YOU). but to get down to your room you have to enter the front door with your provided key when you booked in. Touch the pad, wait, and door will automatically open. But what a difficult approach first, it’s quite steep (photo 14) carer needs to be careful, and best if you swing past the slope bit before you turn and enter the door. You will still have to have someone open the door for you though before you enter a wide but attractive hallway (photo 15) easy to move along for just a few paces until you reach the accessible LANSDOWNE ROAD bedroom (photo 16) again with an automatic door, just touch your key on the pad, wait, and have the pleasant surprise of seeing what will be one of the largest disabled rooms you are likely ever to see. (Photo 17) It is so nicely decorated in pale mute warm colours, with light coloured wooden panels and the orangey expensive looking curtains and very smart comfortable armchair (photo 18) and you cannot help but sink into the luxury that will be yours today. There are plenty of drawer space and table tops for you, a large 42 inch TV, and warm radiators already heated ready for your winter break (photo 18), and a wonderful most comfortable King sized double bed, and for us, the most comfortable pillars you could imagine (photo 20). This room is huge, easy to move around in, warm, and a delightful place to be in. This is why we give Pennyhill the top 5* it deserves, yet there’s more to see. What a surprise, it has snowed during the night, and it is thick, how are we to cope ? As stated in our previous 5 reviews on this our favourite hotel, although a fantastic hotel and Spa and health club, access for disabled is not easy, it is best if you have a bit of mobility, but you will not be disappointed, and unless chair bound, you will really enjoy Pennyhill Park. It is early morning now on the day of our departure, so a shower will start the day nicely for us. The room is lovely and warm (photo 1) and it’s a huge wet room that calls us (photo 2) a large bath will be handy for your carer (photo 3) and there are two sinks available, one for you, another for carer (photo 4), and the wet room is quite large and easy to use the overhead shower (photo 5) Right, we are dressed and time to head for breakfast along the warm pleasant corridor from our room (photo 6) The snow lays thick and white (photo 7) but at least the staff have cleared all the driveways, especially the drive heading down that steep slope towards the health club (photo 8) but snow does add that touch to the surroundings doesn’t it (photo 9). Even the pool will no doubt attract the brave (photo 10) winter swimming is now the in thing, but we will forget it completely, but later on no doubt, the health club facilities ahead will be crowded (photo 11) For us, the problem is getting up the slope and into the main hotel (photo 12). Well, that was easier than we thought, mind you my husband had to get up off his wheelchair, and hang on to the wheelchair while I guided us up, good job he has a little mobility and could manage. Still, we are at our breakfast table (photo 13) with the difficult task of choosing our breakfast hot meal, while all the usual buffet style cereal and juice is available (photo 14) My husband did as normal, filled himself, with porridge and pancakes (photo 15) How can anyone eat so much ? he even tucked into the freshly made baked bread and cakes (photo 16) and he is now waiting for his cooked breakfast (photo 17) I hope he has had enough now, as it’s time to be heading off and departing from what has been a most enjoyable break that has lived up to our expectations.
