The National Memorial Arboretum is the Nation's year-round place to remember, a space where everyone can celebrate lives lived and remember lives lost. A beautiful and inspiring place, the 150-acres of the Arboretum form a living landscape, a home for more than 400 memorials waiting to be discovered. Tales of bravery shown in the most extraordinary of times, selfless service and sacrifice, camaraderie and care are represented by the memorials. From the Armed Forces and Emergency Services to civilian organisations that supported our Nation in times of need, people from all walks of life are represented by the memorials, with designs that are rich in symbolism reflecting those they remember.

The National Memorial Arboretum, not been in my chair before, I would hope they are geared up for me! As they deal with many veterans and amputees don't they. Yes I was right and all was well. First thing to do was go on the Land Train that runs round the site. This was good as there was a commentary on the memorials we passed, I managed to hear most of it too. The best bit of it was I could stay in my chair as I was just wheeled aboard. Following on from the train was to walked about a bit (you know what I mean) the paths are really smooth and wide, although there are some memorial which require off road skills. At one point there were steps but a smooth slope was adjacent to it. There are also plenty of benches for pushers to rest. Not sure how I would get up to the memorial wall, As it threatened rain and we went in for coffee and cake. However whilst on the train I did see a wheelchair being pushed up a spiral path but it looked like hard work and I am not sure Mom would be up to that. Before leaving I checked out the shop which was easy to negotiate and the disabled loo which was fine and one of the best layouts visited yet

From the street to the main entrance, there is level access and the path is 2000mm wide, or more. From the main entrance to the desk, there is level access. The route is 1500mm wide, or more. The door is 1500mm wide, or more. The desk has a low section. From the main entrance to the grounds, there is level access. There is a permanent ramp. There are 150 acres of landscaped grounds at the National Memorial Arboretum, accessible via roads, firm paths and grassed areas. Access from the Remembrance Centre is via automatic doors. One set of these doors is operated by push buttons at a height suitable for wheelchair and mobility scooter users. The doors open onto Heroes' Square, a flat paved area. The square leads to The Boyes Garden where there is a slope 2000mm wide with a gradient of 4.5% leading into the grounds. The slope leads to Millennium Avenue and the Aspects Building. Wooden benches are located throughout the grounds. There are three portable chemical toilets suitable for disabled users located beside the Shot at Dawn, Millennium and Christmas Truce shelters. Visitors can familiarise themselves with these locations using a Visitor Map available from the Welcome Desk or signs located in Heroes' Square and our shelters.

We have a car park. There are accessible parking spaces. The parking is less than 50 metres from the main entrance. Parking is not free. There is a drop-off point at the main entrance. The drop-off point has a dropped kerb. From the car park to the entrance, there is level access. The route is 2000mm wide, or more. Thirty accessible parking bays are available. (15 disabled bays and 15 wide bays for disabled/ family use) On special event days alternative parking arrangements may apply, please visit our website or contact us on 01283 245 100 for further information and advice. The Arboretum’s Car Park B, with a gravel surface, is located one hundred metres from the Remembrance Centre. This car park may not be suitable for wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

Toilets features at The National Memorial Arboretum

There are three accessible toilet cubicles and a Changing Places facility in the Remembrance Centre toilet area. The Changing Places facility is accessed using a RADAR key. A RADAR key is also available at the Welcome Desk, and visitors with specific queries regarding our Changing Places Toilet are advised to speak to our Welcome Desk Team. Baby change facilities are available in one of the disabled cubicles, this cubicle is 1300mm wide at the right side and 1300mm at the front and is fitted with a drop down baby changing table. A second baby changing facility, with a fixed changing station, is located in the accessible toilet in Heroes' Square to the left of the Coffee Shop. A wide pan bariatric toilet is available in the male toilets and 2 wide pan bariatric toilets are available in the female toilet facilities. There is a disabled toilet in Heroes' Square, to the left side of the Coffee Shop. A low level illuminated button suitable for access by wheelchair users opens the door automatically if the toilet is vacant. From inside the toilet the door can be locked/unlocked by an illuminated button on the left side wall. The door can also be locked/unlocked by the knob on the inside of the door. There are three portable chemical toilets suitable for disabled users located beside the Shot at Dawn, Millennium and Christmas Truce shelters. Visitors can familiarise themselves with these locations at the Orientation area within the Remembrance Centre. They are also shown on the Orientation Guide available from the Welcome Desk.
